Significance of anelasticity during creep of an alumina composite reinforced with silicon carbide

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:218050
Four-point bending creep tests were conducted at elevated temperatures on samples of monolithic alumina and on alumina composites containing SiC whiskers or particulates. For each material, the load was removed during creep to determine the nature of the anelastic response. No anelasticity was recorded in the monolithic alumina or in a composite with 5 vol % of SiC particulates but there was a significant anelastic effect in composites reinforced with 15 vol % of either SiC whiskers or SiC particulates. It is proposed that anelastic creep recovery occurs whenever the material contains some form of interconnecting network.
