General Electric Co. has introduced a new family of gas turbines and combined-cycle systems that will be able to achieve 60% thermal efficiency. The technology which allows the increased efficiency is a cooling system that uses steam from the steam cycle to cool the gas-turbine blades. The steam is then cycled back into the steam turbine. The new package is built around an advanced simple-cycle, air-cooled gas-turbine design called G-technology. higher efficiency allows more power to be generated with the same amount of fuel, resulting in a fuel cost savings for the plant owner. GE expects the new design to have an impact in Asia - where power demand is growing at a rate of 5.5 percent a year - and in North America, South America and Europe - where the growth rate is lower, but demand is rising.
