Good power-quality service is achievable
Industries are employing modern microprocessor control equipment, robots and instrumentation, and variable speed drives to improve productivity of their plants and improve the quality of their products. Unfortunately, this high-tech industrial equipment is extremely sensitive to power disturbances. Premium power quality is a necessity in the global marketplace. Industries and utilities are searching for solutions. Current power-quality solutions available include superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), batteries, capacitors, fly-wheels and motor generator sets. The uninterruptible power supply with a battery back-up system is best suited for power outages lasting from several seconds to several minutes. Longer term interruptions, lasting from hours to days require the use of a standby generator. While capacitors reliably and economically handle voltage flickers, there was not a comparable solution for voltage sags and momentary interruptions, until the recent emergence of superconducting technology.
