Natural analogs: Confidence-building tools for HLW repositories
High-level radioactive waste disposal evokes considerable public concern. Since the shortest time-scales are 10,000, modeling performance causes skepticism among both lay and technical people. Assessments of repository performance rely strongly on mathematical models supported by extensive laboratory and field investigation programs. Model validation is challenging and must go beyond the usual compartison of model predictions and experimental results. One approach to the problem is to examine process that have occurred in nature over long timescales. This article forms the introduction to a series of 6 case studies on the fundamentals of natural analog studies and their application to assessment validation.
