Engineers worry about Kobe`s cracked welds

This article is a review of the occurrance of cracked welds as a result of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Kobe, Japan in January 1995. Engineers are uncovering steel moment-resiting frames with damaged welded joints as a result of the seismic event, but the full scope of the problem is not yet defined. Specific examples are discussed; specific in terms of buildings and specific in terms of the type of construction.
