High catalytic activities are required during syn-gas generation via the partial oxidation of methane (POM). In order to study the role of catalyst reducibility, catalytic performance of Rh/Ce0.56Zr0.44O2-x and Rh/CeO2 was studied. Cerium oxide based support materials were prepared by co-precipitation followed by hydrothermal crystallization. Rhodium was incorporated by a modified incipient wetness technique. The catalytic activity, selectivity and stability of these materials as a function of time on stream were investigated. Results showed that Rh/Ce0.56Zr0.44O2 had a higher methane conversion than Rh/CeO2. The selectivity for the generation of H2 and CO was also higher over the former catalyst than over Rh/CeO2. These results may be directly correlated to the promotion in the reducibility of the Rh-ceria interface by doping CeO2 with Zr as evidenced by Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) experiments. These tests were performed from 40ºC to 1100ºC and results showed that the H2 uptake by the zirconium doped catalyst was higher than by the Rh/CeO2 catalyst. Further catalyst characterization also included composition, surface area and crystal phase. The addition of Zr to CeO2 caused the formation of small amount of tetragonal phase.
