Although Indonesia has demonstrated political commitment to natural resource conservation -- the government has designated 25% of the country`s lands as protected areas and legislated an impressive array of laws for protected areas management -- the country`s institutional capacity to actually manage its protected areas is weak. This report reviews the legal, institutional, and administrative lessons learned in 21 natural resource management projects, most in an early stage of development, in order to lay the groundwork for a practicable protected areas management policy.
