Cleanup strategy for the Magnox Pond and Decanning Plant at BNFL`s Sellafield Site

Journal Article · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society
OSTI ID:89436

A major postoperational cleanout (POCO) project is being undertaken in the original Magnox Fuel Storage and Decanning Plant at British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL), Sellafield. The plant was successfully operated for 26 yr to process over 25 000 t of irradiated Magnox natural uranium fuel from the United Kingdom and overseas reactors. Retrieval of the fuel and waste sludges has continued since the plant was taken off-line in 1986 and has been accelerated through the implementation of a POCO strategy. A detailed technical strategy has been developed and implemented to remove the residual radioactive materials in a safe and economic manner. The POCO phase is scheduled for completion by 2001.
