British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) and the Atomic Energy Authority Technology`s Decommissioning and Radwaste Division collaborate on decommissioning. At the colocated Sellafield (BNFL) and Windscale (AEA) Sites there are practical projects ongoing and others in various phases of the planning and design phases. This paper outlines the scope and current status of each organization`s programs on site and describes in more detail the plans and progress made in a selection of BNFL Sellafield projects and in the joint AEA-BNFL Piles Complex Project (PCP). These projects illustrate the plant types and radiological environments typical of the longer term decommissioning requirements. The projects range from pilot demonstration facilities to industrial scale production plants.
