The policy of British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) is to commence the initial stages of decommissioning as soon as feasible after the end of a plant`s operating life. Space constraints within plutonium production areas have necessitated the complete decommissioning of redundant plants allowing reuse of those areas. Through these projects, BNFL has gained experience in clean-out and decontamination and decommissioning of redundant plutonium facilities.
