The authors describe a method where laboratory tests of delayed, cross-linked fracturing fluids can be conducted, using different size bobs, to generate consistent, reproducible measurements of viscosity. In this paper, the authors demonstrate how either the EX-B2 or EX-B5 bob can be used to generate reproducible and correlatable viscosity data. A test method based on the volumetric-average shear rate (VASR), {gamma}{sub v}, is developed to measure the viscous properties of linked hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) gels. They show that the VASR method has two advantages over the nominal shear rate method. First, it takes into consideration the difference in the Couette region caused by the different size bobs. Second, the average non-Newtonian shear rate is used to evaluate the shear that the fluid has experienced. With this method, either the EX-B5 bob or the EX-B2 bob can be used to generate consistent viscosity data for the crosslinked HPG gels tested in this research.
