The propagation of fatigue crack was monitored using the brazed-type ultrasonic probes for high temperature use. Piezoelectric transducer was brazed in this sensor by Aluminum types material in order to improve heatproof characteristics of the sensor, in stead of adhesive bonding for conventional probe. For monitoring cracks, the steel-made wedge was designed in the geometrical condition that an angle of incidence to the test piece was 45 degrees, and piezoelectrodes of LiNbO{sub 3} were brazed on it. Two brazed-type probes are stud-welded on the fatigue test piece, opposing each other. TOFD method was used for monitoring dispersed echo of the edge of crack. The amount of crack extension was calculated by the change of beam path in the geometrical condition. The calculated crack extension matched well to the actual crack extension got by the cutting test, in both fatigue tests at room temperature and at high temperature: 300 C. Using this newly developed method, it was demonstrated that real time monitoring of crack propagation was possible with high accuracy.
