Detection of cracks in the threaded part of the fastener by the ultrasonic method

The bolts, studs, and other components of fasteners in power plants operate in very severe conditions with high temperatures and high stresses. This paper examines the problem of detection of cracks in the smooth and threaded parts of studs. It is shown that the range of application of the existing method of examination of the studs is limited, and algorithms for evaluating the depth of cracks in the threaded part of the studs in inspection with an inclined probe were investigated.
