ABB is introducing a new standard of high performance reaction blading (HPB) for existing steam turbines as well as for new equipment. The new blading is characterized by twisted, bowed and tapered airfoils. This provides a major heat-rate improvement with respect to current standard blading in the same turbine. This article describes the theoretical and experimental development of the new blading. Physical flow phenomena are related to loss mechanisms to explain the performance improvement. The combined approach of theoretical optimization by numerical analysis and experimental confirmation by model and full-scale testing is justified. Customer benefits of the advanced blading are illustrated.
