The finite element formulation for the droplet impact in rotating large steam turbine blades is presented. Considering tapered airfoil geometries and damping effects, the estimation of time step stability limits of direct numerical integration is analyzed. The applied beam preliminary analyses and the final three dimensional finite element computation provide efficient solutions for impact problems of rotating turbine blades. For the considered large steam turbine blade, erosive droplets do not induce dangerous dynamic stresses for the blade endurance. Only water brooklets can cause structural damages of rotating blades. The presented algorithm can be extended to solid particle impact problems.
