High-Resolution Neutron Imaging with Microchannel Plates

Conference ·
OSTI ID:786644
NOVA Scientific (NOVA) is developing a substantial advance in high spatial resolution neutron imaging. We are adapting the high-resolution imaging microchannel plate (MCP) detector technology already widely used for the detection of ions and electrons, soft X rays, and ultraviolet photons. Furthermore, the ultrafast MCP temporal resolution will allow neutron time-of-flight and energy measurements, as well as time-tagging. NOVA's detection scheme incorporates the (n, {alpha}) capture conversion within the MCP bulk structure itself, fabricated using a lead glass that includes high levels of the isotope {sup 10}B. Multiplication of the neutron capture event then occurs by secondary electron emission from the alpha-particle product.
