High-resolution neutron imaging with microchannel plates

Journal Article · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society
OSTI ID:678124
A number of important commercial, scientific, and defense applications would significantly benefit from the development of an active electronic position-sensitive neutron detector with high resolution (<15 {micro}m), large detection area of >100 cm{sup 2}, and ultrafast timing resolution (<100 ps). NOVA Scientific (NOVA) is developing a substantial advance in high spatial resolution neutron imaging. The authors are adapting the high-resolution imaging microchannel plate (MCP) detector technology already widely used for the detection of ions and electrons, soft X rays, and ultraviolet photons. Furthermore, the ultrafast MCP temporal resolution of {approximately}100 ps will allow neutron time-of-flight and energy measurements, as well as time-tagging. Current options for neutron images have serious limitations, and compared with other imaging modalities (e.g., X ray), the state of the art remains arguably crude.
