IAQ surveys: How to be effective and efficient

Conference ·

The most common complaint one usually hears about typical Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) investigations is that they are not solutions-oriented. According to a number of sophisticated building owners the authors have interviewed many IAQ investigations do not address the problem directly. They ask a lot of questions, interview a number of occupants, take a lot of air samples, but they rarely define the true causes of, or the solutions to, the problem. While there may be some very good reasons for this, including limited scientific research into the causes of IAQ-related illnesses, perceptions remain on the part of many building owners that IAQ investigations are cost a lot more money than they need to and are not really solving the problem. This is not what owners wan to hear. They want the problem to go away. At Halliwell Engineering, they have had some success in resolving IAQ problems effectively and efficiently despite the fact that many of the specific causes of IAQ complaints remain a mystery. Part of the solution seems to lie with the building manager, and part of it lies with the IAQ engineer. This article will identify some of the underlying problems with inefficient IAQ investigations as well as the solutions that have worked well.
