The cost of one sick day due to an indoor air quality (IAQ) problem can equal the cost of energy for that one person's space for up to six months. The technology is available to begin effective management of this issue now, before the complaints and illnesses reach levels that result in all building operations being controlled by government regulation. Indoor air quality has become a major issue and concern in commercial building management. There are many reasons for this trend, but it is principally because health concerns, along with labor and legal costs as a result of poor air quality, have all risen so sharply in recent years. At the top of the list of solutions to this problem is the development of a proactive IAQ management plan. This article includes some useful advice on establishing practices and procedures that lead to the development of a successful plan for management.
