Radiation exposure of the public in the vicinity of a group of coal-fired power plants near Belgrade has been studied. Experimental data on the contents of uranium, thorium, and potassium in used coal have been used to calculate the release rates of natural radionuclides from the power plants. A generalized model for the analysis of the radiological impact of an energy source that includes the two-dimensional version of the cloud model has been used for simulation of the transport of radionuclides. The inhalation dose rates for an adult are assessed during rapidly changing meteorological conditions.
