Silica is widely used as a catalyst support, as a dielectric, and is a major part of aerosols and thus is important in atmospheric chemistry studies. Surface properties play a crucial role in these processes. Activation of the surface can change the surface properties. A study was undertaken to investigate the structure of silylhydride groups stabilized on the silica surface by FTIR spectroscopy. Three types of silylhydride groups were identified: ({triple_bond}Si-O){sub 2}SiH{sub 2}, ({triple_bond}Si-O){sub 2}SiH(OH), ({triple_bond}Si-O){sub 3}SiH. The data obtained confirms the earlier suggestion that the silylene center is a major chemisorption center on the surface of reactive silica.
