  1. Gary Drilling Co., Davis, CA (United States)

North Valley Oil and Gas Company drilled and completed the most exciting discovery on the West Coast in 1992. The {open_quotes}Bloomfield{close_quotes} No. 1 RD No. 1 well tapped some 180 feet of pay in the Fourth Massive Sand and flowed 15,600 Mcf/D through a 33/64` bean. The perforated interval was 7792`-7900`. The well was drilled in September 1992 and went on line in January 1993. This well was the discovery well for the Bixler Gas Field, which at present has two gas wells and has made almost 4 billion cubic feet of gas. The original prospect was designed to be a redrill of the 1985 dryhole drilled by Natural Gas Corp. The proposal was to drill 800 feet to the west and look for gas in the Blewett sand, which had a gas show in the original well. The Fourth Massive sand was considered to be a secondary objective. Isopach and isochron work from available seismic lines indicated a strong chance that some of the Fourth Massive Sand could be present beneath the shale-filled Meganos Gorge next to a large fault that formed the west boundary to the Prospect (one of the faults of the Midland Fault System). The original NGC well had no fourth Massive Sand present, but did log a good show in the Blewett Sand (300 units) and appeared to have thin gas pay on water. The resulting redrill had none of the main target, the Blewett Sand, which had shaled out between the Redrill No. 1 and the Original Hole. However, the redrill also found some 200 feet of the Fourth Massive Sand. This required a 30% angle to the Gorge Wall to preserve that much section in the 800 feet that separated the Redrill No. 1 from the Original Hole. It is very likely that other small but prolific traps exist beneath the Meganos Gorge. Structural and stratigraphic analysis of seismic data will be the keys to unlock future discoveries in this part of the Sacramento Basin.
