River Break gas field is in the Sacramento-San Joaquin river delta area of N. Contra Costa County. Sedimentary strata penetrated in River Break gas field range in age from Holocene to Late Cretaceous. The deepest well in the field was drilled to 9,000 ft penetrating about 600 ft of undifferentiated Upper Cretaceous marine strata. The stratigraphic sequence down to the base of the Hamilton is that typically found west of the Midland fault. Beneath the Hamilton, in the NW. part of the field, the Meganos shale member lies unconformably on the Martinez Formation. The existence of River Break gas field is due to a buried Eocene erosional feature known as the Meganos Gorge.
