Greens Lake Gas field is in E. Yolo County, approx. 4 miles southwest of Sacramento. Eocene and older formations were all deposited in a marine environment. Regionally, the structure is a westerly to southwesterly dipping homocline that has been truncated by the Markley Gorge. The Markley Gorge is a buried erosional surface of late Eocene age that trends roughly northwest. A remnant of Meganos-Martinez Sandstone, which escaped erosion during formation of the Markley Gorge, constitutes the main reservoir of the field. A lens of sand apparently eroded from the Meganos-Martinez Island. was redeposited in the Markley Gorge and forms a contiguous secondary reservoir. Although characteristics of the produced gas indicate the 2 pools are contiguous, each pool has distinct reservoir properties. The permeability and porosity of the redeposited sandstone lens are measurably less than that of the Meganos-Martinez Sandstone.
