Anisotropy of the interaction between rare-earth and iron ions in thulium orthoferrite

Journal Article · · Sov. Phys. - Solid State (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:7366385

An investigation was made of the magnetic behavior of thulium orthoferrite in the temperature range 4.2 to 300/sup 0/K. The difference between the spontaneous magnetic moment above and below the reorientation temperature was due to the difference between the signs and absolute values of the exchange parameters (J/subA//subB/)/suba/ and (J/subA//subB/)/subc/. The compensation point of the orthoferrite TmFeO/sub 3/ appeared only when the crystal was stressed or contained foreign impurities enhancing the interaction between the rare-earth and iron ions.
