Energy: power for people
Individuals can help solve the energy crisis by not wasting energy, by becoming informed on energy options, and by exerting their influence on friends and representatives of government. Americans were not accustomed to thinking of energy consumption levels when the recent crisis caught up with them, and an important education process has been necessary. A review of dwindling petroleum and natural gas resources, the renewed interest in coal and its derivatives, and the technical and safety concerns of nuclear energy are presented in language for the lay reader. Cleaner, safer energy sources, such as solar, geothermal, wind, and ocean thermal gradients need research and development efforts. Practical suggestions are offered for individual efforts and approaches to influencing laws, codes, and taxes in ways that will encourage energy conservation. The book is illustrated with numerous photographs, diagrams, and maps, and a glossary defines terms in simple language. A bibliography of suggested reading identifies the selections that are easy to read. (DCK)
