The guide presented discusses the design basis floods that nuclear power plants should be designed to withstand without loss of capability for cold shutdown and maintenance thereof. An outline is presented of the nature and scope of detailed hydrologic engineering activities involved in determining estimates for the probable maximum flood and for seismically induced floods resulting from dam failures. Situations are also described for which less extensive analyses are acceptable.
