Phase state of the system HfO/sub 2/--Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in the HfO/sub 2/-rich region

The phase composition of ZrO/sub 2/--Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and HfO/sub 2/--Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ systems were investigated at room temperature and at high temperatures. It was found that for low rare earth oxide contents the fluorite solid solution formation mechanism is not the same in systems based on ZrO/sub 2/ or HfO/sub 2/: In systems based on HfO/sub 2/, formation of the tetragonal phase is not observed up to 1500/sup 0/C. In the system HfO/sub 2/--Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/, for a mixture with 30 mole percent Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ formation of a second cubic phase, apparently a compound of the pyrochlore type--Eu/sub 2/Hf/sub 2/O/sub 7/ was established.
