Motorcycle emissions, their impact, and possible control techniques

Seven motorcycles, ranging in size from 100 to 1200 cu cm were tested for emissions characterization purposes using the federal seven-mode test procedure for 1971 and older light-duty vehicles, the federal LA-4 test for 1972 and later light-duty vehicles and various steady-state conditions. Emission factors and national impact were also calculated. Expressing motorcycle emissions as percentages of the revised 1970 national totals from all sources, motorcycles were estimated to account for about 0.6% of hydrocarbons, 0.5% of the carbon monoxide, 0.01% of the nitrogen oxides, 0.002% of the sulfur oxides, and 0.01% of the particulates. As percentages of revised 1970 national totals from mobile sources only, motorcycles were estimated to be responsible for 1.0% of the hydrocarbons, 0.9% of CO, 0.03% of NO/sub x/, 0.05% of SO/sub x/, and 0.3% of particulates. An examination of the tentative standards for the 1976 model year showed that the most significant reductions must occur in hydrocarbons from 2-stroke bikes and CO from larger machines (both 2-stroke and 4-stroke).
