Magnetic properties of RMn/sub 2/Ge/sub 2/ and RMn/sub 2/Si/sub 2/ compounds crystallizing in the BaAl/sub 4/ type structure were investigated over a wide temperature range (4.2/sup 0/K to 1200/sup 0/K). LaMn/sub 2/Ge/sub 2/, CeMn/sub 2/Ge/sub 2/, PrMn/sub 2/Ge/sub 2/, NdMn/sub 2/Ge/sub 2/ and LaMn/sub 2/Si/sub 2/ all possess Curie temperatures above 300/sup 0/K and the easy direction of magnetization have been found to be along the c-axis. When R is a heavy rare earth antiferromagnetic coupling was obtained at 4.2/sup 0/K between the rare earth and manganese moments whereas when R is a light rare earth a ferromagnetic coupling of moments was obtained. YMn/sub 2/Si/sub 2/, ThMn/sub 2/Si/sub 2/, and ThMn/sub 2/Ge/sub 2/ possess a small moment less than .2..mu../sub B/ at 4.2/sup 0/K. High temperature susceptibilities on RMn/sub 2/Si/sub 2/ compounds indicate a Curie--Weiss behavior.
