Should you convert to coal

A study at Combustion Engineering Inc. reveals that it is impractical to convert industrial boilers that were designed to burn oil or gas, unless those premium fuels are not available and a substantial downrating in steam capacity can be absorbed. After citing some general modifications required to convert oil and gas boilers to coal, two specific examples are described. A bottom-supported unit designed for burning oil can be converted to spreader-stoker firing with extensive modifications. A top-supported unit designed for gas or oil can be more readily adapted to pulverized-coal firing than a spreader stoker because of its tall, narrow furnace. (MCW)
