Based on the limitations of retrofit applications, a summary is presented of means by which existing oil or gas fired boilers can be converted to coal utilization. Boiler capacity is discussed as well as space limitations, particulate emissions, ash and cinder formation, air pollution, and effectiveness. Specifically, the following modes of firing are discussed: (1) spreader stoker firing; (2) pulverized coal firing; (3) producer gas firing; and (4) fluidized bed coal firing. Outputs in the range of 20,000 to 500,000 pph are considered. Auxillary equipment, particulate emissions, SO/sub 2/ emissions, and nitrogen oxide emissions are discussed briefly. A listing of all design factors to be considered (if coal firing is used) is included. (MJJ)
