The infection of Bacillus subtilis (whose DNA contains thymine) by viruses whose DNA contains uracil (PBS2 phage) or 5-hydroxymethyluracil (phi e phage) instead of thymine was studied. The goal was to learn how and why these unusual viruses synthesize DNA containing unusual bases and to gain insight into why thymine evolved for most natural DNAs. (auth)
