Differential transcription of nonrepeated DNA during development of Neurospora crassa

Journal Article · · Dev. Biol.; (United States)
The transcription of non-repeated DNA sequences of four developmental cell types of eukaryotic fungus Neurospora crassa was measured quantitatively by DNA:RNA hybridization using hydroxyapatite chromatography. DNA transcription was 34 percent (68 percent of the genome) at midlog phase of mycelial growth and 15 percent at conidial phase. Conidial sprouts and unbranched mycelial cells showed markedly increased transcription 25 percent, and 27 percent respectively. DNAs from mycelia and conidia did not show any difference in nucleotide base composition and sequence homologies. It was concluded that approximately 30 percent of N. crassa genome consist of sequences which are involved either in cell differentiation and development. (auth)
