The TGA apparatus is widely used to obtain kinetic data on the devolatilization of coal and the reactivities of chars with gases. However, TGA results often correlate poorly with results obtained in large-scale pilot plant fluidized reactors. In addition, the TGA apparatus uses such small samples that insufficient solids, gases, or liquids are produced to permit characterization of the reaction products. A versatile, small, fluidized-bed bench-scale Coal Evaluation Unit (CEU) which has been used to study the pyrolysis of coals and the reactivities of chars with gases is described. Results obtained in the CEU correlate well with results obtained in fluidized-bed pilot plants. High-volatile bituminous coals which agglomerate in conventional fluidized-bed reactors can be devolatilized in the CEU. With this unit, one operator can determine both the pyrolytic behavior of a coal and the gasification characteristics of the resulting char in one day.
