Drilling starts again on the North West Shelf. [Australia]

The new Australian Federal Government, elected December 13, 1975, was expected to encourage an early start toward development off the massive natural gas and oil reserves off Western Australia, since it has gained sovereignty over offshore areas. Full development of the oil and gas resources of the northwest is expected to take at least ten to fifteen years. The North West Shelf is the largest undeveloped petroleum resource off the Australian mainland and its development is vital to forestall further dependence of Australia on Middle East oil. Legal aspects of the endeavor are reviewed. The Woodside--Burmah consortium has announced that actions and preparations at North Rankin, Goodwyn, and Angel gas/condensates sites are well advanced for licenses and production; prospects are that these will make a major contribution to the nation's energy supply and form the basis of a trade in LNG export. The consortium began a new drilling program in the North West Shelf and is optimistic about finding hydrocarbons in Tidepole I, south of the existing Goodwyn gas field. (MCW)
