The Australian North West Shelf Project is the largest resource development project in Australian history. Being developed entirely by private enterprise, the project combines a major pipeline natural gas project and a world scale LNG project. The LNG arrangements are particularly complex involving six Sellers, eight Buyers and nine receiving terminals. The Project began with the discovery of the North Rankin, Goodwyn and Angle gas fields off the North-West coast of Australia in 1971-72. Contracts were signed in 1980 between the Project Participants (Woodside Petroleum (Project Operator), British Petroleum, California Asiatic Oil (Chevron), Shell, BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary)) and the State Energy Commission of Western Australia for the supply of 10.9 x 10/sup 6/m/sup 3/ (385 MMscfd) of gas per day for 20 years. Domestic Gas (Domgas) Production, representing Phase I of the Project, commenced in August 1984 following the commissioning of the North Rankin A Offshore Platform, pipeline to shore and gas processing plant. The cost of Phase I was A$2.2 x 10/sup 9/ (US/1.5x10/sup 9/). The LNG Phase (Phase II) of the Project accelerated in 1981 with the signing of Memoranda of Intent with 8 Japanese Buyers for the supply of approximately 6 million tonnes per year of LNG.
