Optical resonator with distributed feedback. [Theoretical analysis]

Much interest has been evinced recently in the interaction of light with periodic inhomogeneities of a refractive index in connection with the possibility of constructing lasers with distributed feedback. Lasers have been described with distributed feedback based on bulk inhomogeneity, and it has been proposed to use, for this purpose, surface inhomogeneities of the waveguide layer--diffraction gratings (DG), in the form of a corrugated boundary of the waveguide. In addition to providing the distributed feedback, such a diffraction grating makes it possible to decrease, by several orders of magnitude, the diffraction divergence inherent in film lasers, since the radiation is not emitted by a thin waveguide layer, but by the entire surface of the diffraction grating. Experiments have confirmed these conclusions. The possibility of combining small radiation divergence and single-mode generation in a laser with a diffraction grating is discussed.
