Environmental consultants have become an essential element in the industry's expansion process. Besides collecting data for environmental base line studies, a consultant offers recommendations on mitigating the environmental impact of a project and generally defends his position at public hearings for mining permits. Environmental consulting firms available to the industry range in size and capability from large, international, long-established firms that can handle environmental studies, physical engineering, planning and socioeconomics, to smaller, newly-established firms that have been spawned in recent years by environmental fervor.
