Consultants have role in rethinking, reorganizing environmental compliance

Regulated companies a few years ago were virtually at the mercy of outside consultants for solutions to environmental and regulatory compliance problems. Lets call in an expert was the dominant response of company managers faced with the complex and seemingly endless body of environmental regulations thrust upon them. Today, although the flow of new regulations has not ceased, companies have more alternatives to consider when the need for environmental expertise arises. One reason regulated companies have more choices in approaching environmental management and compliance issues is that they have developed greater expertise in the field. Many clients of environmental consulting firms have gone through a cycle that started with placing their fates in the hands of outside consultants, then evolved to developing environmental management functions in-house and culminated in making outside consultants a part of the management team.
