Sulfur compound cleanup: flue gas desulfurization: an overview

Journal Article · · Chem. Eng. Prog.; (United States)

Technology for flue gas desulfurization is improving rapidly because of the large development effort underway. Lime-limestone (throwaway) leads recovery by a wide margin in adoption, not because it is well developed but because it is farther along than recovery. The major development effort underway on recovery may bring it more into the use picture in a few years. The main problems in lime-limestone scrubbing are mist elimination, gas reheat, and sludge disposal. The test programs underway are producing improvements. One approach is to mix the sludge with all the other liquid and solid plant wastes in such a way as to combine everything into an inert solid. The debate on scrubber availability goes on. While much progress has been made in the past year or so, the data base is still inadequate for confident extrapolation from one situation to another. More attention is given to the cost/benefit ratio by environmental agencies. For existing plants, there is a trend toward relaxing requirements somewhat and looking more to ambient standards as the criterion.
