It is necessary to develop peak-load and semipeak-load plants in connection with the increasing weekly and daily differences in load demand in the United Power System of the European part of the USSR. For the conditions of the European part of the USSR it is advisable to use, as semipeak-load plants, special 500 MW steam turbine units. In this connection it is necessary to select the optimal design of the semipeak load unit, i.e., the main steam conditions, use of reheat and reheat steam conditions, feedwater temperature, the number of regenerative bleeds of steam, design condenser pressure, temperature of flue gases, and other design characteristics. The main features of the semipeak-load generating unit affecting the design are the decreased numbers of hours of use, the frequent starts, and shorter start up times. These features were taken into consideration in optimizing the parameters of the unit. For engineering and economic calculations, use was made of a system of mathematical models developed by the Siberian Power Institute. Calculation of the duration of loading was conducted according to a special procedure which is discussed.
