The 500 MW Trombay Unit No. 6, is a Combustion Engineering multifuel fired boiler designed for the use of oil and gas fuels with provision for future coal firing and a KWU reheat turbine supplied by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) India. A Honeywell TDC-3000 system with a DPS computer has been installed to operate the Steam Generator and Turbine Generator auxiliaries from a bank of CRTs from a centralized control room. The special features include the plant operation from a bank of CRTs in addition to the back up panel, report generation, performance monitoring package, plant start up and shut down guidance, special displays, equipment life monitoring, equipment operating history, alarm diagnosis through an expert system package, observer technique for steam temperature controls, unit automatic start up and shut down and integrated testing at the factory. This paper deals with salient aspects relating to concepts in design, implementation, testing and commissioning of the microprocessor based instrumentation and control systems adopted for the Trombay 500 MW Unit No. 6.
