A grid plate for a lead storage battery includes generally parallel, vertically extending grid rods and a current take-off connector positioned adjacent the upper ends of the rods. At least some of the rods have the portions farthest from the take-off connector formed as half rods and the portions closest to the connector as whole rods. Another embodiment has at least some of the rods formed partly as half rods located on only one side of a plane parallel to the grid surface and partly as whole rods located on both sides of the plane.
