This patent describes improvement in a battery plate strip for making battery plates for use in lead-acid batteries having a battery grid strip including a reticulated grid strip portion, a lug strip portion adjacent to the reticulated grid strip portion on one edge of the reticulated grid strip portion and a border strip portion adjacent to the reticulated grid strip portion on an opposite edge of the reticulated grid strip portion from the lug strip portion and a battery paste layer disposed on the reticulated grid strip portion. The improvement comprises the battery paste layer having a profiled surface having at least one groove which is disposed at an angle of greater than about 45{degrees} and less than 90{degrees} relative to the border strip portion on either side of a plane perpendicular to the border strip portion and the profiled surface having a region of reduced width which is oriented generally parallel to the border strip portion and which meets at least some of the grooves.
