System designer looks at the GPIB

Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has made a commitment to use the IEEE-488 General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB). This paper describes some of the use and implementation problems that we encountered in designing and operating a GPIB demonstration system at LLL. The system uses several manufacturers' instruments connected together with a microprocessor controller. Some features that manufacturers could implement to help users become accustomed to GPIB operation are suggested.
