Underwater welding completes 16-mile Lake Erie gas line

An underwater welding procedure was used to construct a 26-km (16-mi.) natural gas pipeline from Port Stanley, Ont., to a field gathering point offshore in Lake Erie. The line is the latest in a network of gathering systems built by the Consumers' Gas Co. of Toronto from producing wells in the lake. The decision to weld the line underwater was based on the greater integrity of a fully welded system. Previously, the company had assembled long sections of the line ashore, towed them into position, and joined the sections with mechanical couplings.
