The microstructure and certain properties of two cross sections of the ternary system Nb--Ti--O were investigated in the sector where separation into two immiscible layers is not observed. It has been shown that the cross section parallel to the Nb--Ti side at a content of 5 at. percent O is similar to the binary system Nb--Ti in the character of phase equilibrium, but that the ..cap alpha.. + ..beta.. region is extended and the one-phase region based on the ..beta..-phase is constricted, as a result of which the ..beta.. reversible ..cap alpha.. transition begins at higher Nb contents than in binary alloys Nb--Ti. The cross section Nb--Ti/sub 3/O of the system Nb--Ti--O is quasibinary, which enables the system Nb--Ti--O to be subjected to triangulation into the two systems Nb--Ti--Ti/sub 3/O and Ti/sub 3/O--Nb--O. The character of the phase equilibrium between Nb and Ti/sub 3/O is represented by a phase diagram of the eutectic type.
