PHASE EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAM OF THE Cr-Ni-Ni$sub 3$Nb-NbCr$sub 2$ SYSTEM

The presence of the congruently melting intermetallic compounds NbCr/sub 2/ and Ni/sub 3/Nb in the Cr--Nb and Ni--Nb binary systems makes the existence of quasibinary sections in the Cr--Ni--Nb ternary possible. For the study of this system 180 alloy mixtures were prepared in an arc furnace. The annealed specimens were examined by x-ray diffraction, differentinl thermal analysis and quenching methods. The isotherms were determined at 50 deg C intervals. On the basis of the results obtained, the phase equilibrium diagram of the Cr--Ni--Ni/ sub 3/Nb--NbCr/sub 2/ was constructed. A 4-phase peritectic point was found at 1175 plus or minus 5 and 1160 plus or minus 5 deg C together with a 4-phase eutectic at 1173 plus or minus 5 deg C. Addition of Ni resulted in the stabilization of the E-phase (based on the high-temperature modification of NbCr/ sub 2/) in the ternary alloys. At Ni concentrations higher than 5 to 7% the BETA -phase (based on the low-temperature modification of NiCr/sub 2/) could not be observed. All the 4 binaries delimiting the investigated quaternary system were found to possess a eutectic structure. (TTT)
