Measurement of the magnetic dipole moment of. beta. -emitting /sup 31/S by use of a polarized proton beam and nuclear magnetic resonance detection

Polarized ..beta..-emitting /sup 31/S nuclei (I/sup ..pi../ = 1/2/sup +/, T/sub 1///sub 2/ = 2.6 s) were produced in the reaction /sup 31/P(p, n)/sup 31/S, E/sub p/ = 7.9 MeV, in a thick target of red phosphorous which served also as host for the implanted /sup 31/S nuclei. The net polarization transferred to the /sup 31/S nuclei, observed by measuring the ..beta..-decay asymmetry, was antiparallel to the proton polarization for direct ground-state production and parallel for production through the first excited state. The magnetic dipole moment of /sup 31/S, measured by nuclear-magnetic-resonance destruction of the polarization, is absolute value ..mu.. = (0.48793(8))..mu../sub N/, including the diamagnetic correction.
